Historical Overview: In 1718, Russian Tsar Peter I received a proposal from Yefim Nikonov, a shipyard worker, to build a submarine capable of approaching enemy ships underwater and attacking them with cannons. Peter I, an advocate for innovation, supported the idea. By 1720, a prototype was built—considered the world’s first submarine.
The submarine design resembled a wooden barrel, 6 meters long and 2 meters wide, covered with tin. A pump system and lead plates with holes controlled its submersion. Although initially successful, the vessel was damaged during trials, leading Peter I to order reinforcements. However, after Peter’s death in 1725, funding was cut, and the project was abandoned. Nikonov was eventually demoted and sent to work as a regular shipyard worker.
This model recreates a significant piece of maritime history, combining fine craftsmanship with a fascinating historical background. Perfect for model builders and history enthusiasts alike!
