The attitude control (steering, also called RCS) engines that made travel to the Moon possible! This is a "close to" full size model kit of the R-4D thruster used in the Apollo space program and still in use today. Some designs simply can't be improved on!
16 of these were used on every Apollo Lunar Module, and 16 more on the Apollo Service Module, allowing these craft to move and rotate in any direction. These are the small engines you see on each corner of the Lunar module. Each had a thrust of around 100 pounds.
This kit is made of custom 3D printed plastic. Printed in silver, gray, and black, it looks really good even without any paint, but you can paint and detail it if you wish. Contains 14 3D printed parts, stainless steel hardware and tools for an authentic looking assembly, complete instructions, historical photos, and full-color self-adhesive decals printed on silver paper! (Decals are not die- cut; you'll need to carefully cut them out.)
Should only take an hour or so for assembly and the only thing you'll need is a bit of super glue (or similar; anything but white glue), pliers or a wrench for the nuts, and maybe some sandpaper and a hobby knife.
When assembled, this beauty stands almost 13" high and is about 5 1/2" in diameter. I've actually had one purchased by a space museum!
The only thing not included are the wires shown in some of the photos; you can use any sort of wire that's handy, or skip the wire.
Since this is 3D printed, it will show visible layer lines; the lines on the engine bell actually seem to add to the effect! They make it look like spun aluminum. Quick tip: If you intend to paint this, the best thing I've found for filling layer lines quickly is "Automotive FILLER primer" in a spray can at your local big-box or automotive store. It goes on thick and fills layer lines quickly. Spray on a heavy coat and let dry for 1-2 days before sanding.
